3.
Raspberry Pi

 4. This page is my personal reference/cheat sheet for Raspberry Pi
 5. related topics.

 6.
Raspbian Wheezy

 7.
Install the XFCE Desktop

 8. To install XFCE to use it instead of the default LXDE.
 9.
$ sudo apt-get install task-xfce-desktop

 10.
XFCE for the TightVNC Server

 11. After setting up TightVNC, you can configure it to load the XFCE desktop environment
 12. by modifying your
~/.vnc/xstartup
file. Mine looks like this:
 13.
#!/bin/sh
 14. xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
 15. xsetroot -solid grey
 16. export XXL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
 17. /usr/bin/xfce4-session

 18.

 19.
Use
vncpasswd
to set a password.

 20.
Use
vncserver
to start a VNC server (defaults to display :1
 21. for the first server)

 22.
Use
vncserver -kill :1
to kill a server.
 23.

 24.
Pi User Groups

 25. If you add other users to the system, you'll probably want them to be members of
 26. all the groups the pi user is part of. So...
 27.

 28.
adm

 29.
dialout

 30.
cdrom

 31.
sudo

 32.
audio

 33.
video

 34.
plugdev

 35.
games

 36.
users

 37.
netdev

 38.
input

 39.

 40.
$ sudo usermod -a -G adm,dialout,cdrom,sudo,audio,video,plugdev,games,users,netdev,input <ins>kirsle</ins>

 41.
Sound access for other users

 42. If you add a second user to the system besides the default "pi" user, they don't
 43. get access to the sound device by default - so for example, the XFCE Mixer applet
 44. gives a gstreamer error.
 45. To get the XFCE Mixer applet to work, make sure the gstreamer plugins are
 46. installed.
 47.
$ sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins

 48.
Method 1: audio user group

 49. This is probably the preferred way. Make sure your alternate user is a member of
 50. the
audio
group.
 51.
Method 2: Add your user to the ACL for /dev/snd

 52.
$ sudo setfacl -m u:<ins>kirsle</ins>:rw /dev/snd/*

 53. You'll need to do this before starting the VNC server. If you've already
 54. started one, shut it down and restart it.
